What is Sudometrics?

Sudometrics is the early warning system for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN)

Diabetes is the leading cause of peripheral neuropathy, a condition where high blood sugar damages the nerves, especially in the feet. This nerve damage may result in numbness, tingling, or even a total loss of sensation, making it easy for minor injuries – like cuts or blisters – to go unnoticed and untreated.

Over time, these unnoticed injuries can develop into serious complications such as ulcers, infections, and, in severe cases, may lead to a lower limb amputation.

Unfortunately, diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) frequently develops silently, with many people only discovering the problem after significant nerve damage has occurred.

Early screening for DPN is crucial because it allows for timely intervention before irreversible foot complications develop, helping to prevent ulcers and reduce the risk of amputation. By identifying DPN in its earliest stages, patients and healthcare providers can take proactive steps to protect foot health and improve quality of life.

A tried and tested technology.

Sudometrics is a combination of clinically proven sudomotor (sweat) function pads and a smartphone app for iPhone or Android devices, as well as the functionality on this website for logged in users..

The app uses machine learning and advanced computer vision technologies to work out the degree of sudomotor damage.

Sudometrics acts on your body’s sudomotor function, i.e. your ability to produce sweat. The nerves to the sweat glands are part of the body’s autonomic nervous system and are made up of unmyelinated C-fibres, meaning they’re more vulnerable to damage, especially in diabetes.

Therefore, it can detect the earliest signs of diabetes-related nerve injury, before significant harm occurs.

Sudometrics can be used both by health care professionals in a clinical setting and by diabetes patients in the comfort of their own homes.

  • For health professionals
  • For patients

Sudometrics is designed to be used by health care professionals or academics in a clinical setting. Take a look at our short introductory video, which explains more about how to use Sudometrics as a health care professional.

Sudometrics is simple to use by people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, or those who are at risk of DPN.

What do the results look like?

  • If the sweat function pad has turned fully pink after ten minutes, then no sudomotor dysfunction has been detected: your feet are producing the right amount of sweat, meaning that the nerve cells in charge of regulating your sweat production are in good shape.
  • The more blue in the result, the more your sudomotor function is struggling. Sudometrics will tell you exactly how badly impaired, and you can use the app to compare the results against previous tests.

If the pad remains completely blue, then this is a sign of sudomotor dysfunction.

If the pad goes a mixture of blue and pink, then this is also a sign of sudomotor dysfunction. Sudometrics will identify how much of an issue this is, will enable comparisons to be made to previous results, and help to identify an appropriate course fo action.

If the pad goes completely pink, then no sudomotor dysfunction has been detected. Use this result as a comparison point for future tests, to ensure that treatment s progressing satisfactorily.
